CiTA Awards: Golden Award for Bioinnovo

Gathered in the Fair Ground of La Rural, in the capital city of Argentina, the jury of the 11th edition of the International Center for Innovation in Agricultural Technology (CiTA) Awards granted Bioinnovo the award in the Non-Traditional Innovation category, and also the Golden award, for the development of a novel treatment for the control of neonatal calf diarrhea.

Bioinnovo IgY DNT is the first biological product based on Y immunoglobulins, or IgY antibodies, produced in Argentina and developed by the technology-based company created by INTA and Vetanco.

Amadeo Nicora, INTA’s president and one of those who delivered the award, celebrated the acknowledgment for 15 years of research: “INTA’s primary role is to transform knowledge into innovation in order to promote the country’s development and, in that sense, we need public-private partnerships to transfer knowledge to the citizens,” he said.

Andrés Wigdorowitz, Bionnovo’s researcher and Director, said he was very pleased because: “This is the recognition of work team, of an idea, of an achievement, of a successful product.”

He also expressed his gratitude and added: “I’m very proud to have created Bioinnovo, to be able to work with this public-private interaction that became a real team.”

Neonatal calf diarrhea is one of the main causes for calf mortality: it accounts for 57% of total calf mortality, particularly in calves less than 1 month old. Bioinnovo IgY DNT contains the antibodies the calf requires to control this syndrome, and can be easily added to the milk from the beginning of lactation.

“This innovative product against the main pathogens affecting cattle production protects calves against scours, reduces the use of antibiotics, and does not induce bacterial or viral resistance,” said Wigdorowitz.

Thanks to the use of this product, “the environmental viral load and the severity of diarrhea are reduced, preventing antibiotic misuse. In addition, it boosts the typical prevention strategy of vaccinating the dams and of colostrum intake by the calves,” he explained.

Raúl Brega, Vetanco‘s, Director, stressed that product’s efficacy against the viruses and bacteria associated with calf scours “provides a solution for the therapy of diarrhea, as well as for the prevention of the disease when included in the management of artificially-reared calves.”

In addition, the researchers assured that, as it is a non-pharmacological product, Bioinnovo IgY DNT extends the efficacy of antibiotics by reducing their administration frequency and need. Its continuous use does not induce bacterial or viral resistance, and promotes calf intestinal and systemic health.

The CiTA Award is granted to companies, institutions and experts that bring solutions to problems faced by farmers. We congratulate Bioinnovo’s team for its outstanding and hard work, which proudly motivates us to continue growing together.
